Water Pressure Tanks:

What Are They and How do They Work?

You expect a certain level of water pressure in your water flow when you open a spigot. Unlike city water, water pressure for your home well requires a pressure tank to build this pressure. A water well system creates this pressure using compressed air bearing down on the water. When the valve is opened, this pressure pushes the water out of the tanks and into your home through your pipe system. If the pressure drops too low, a pressure switch is activated, turning on the pump to refill the pressure tank.

These pressure tanks act as reservoirs and are generally set to keep pressure within 20 pounds per square inch of your starting and stopping parameters. For example: with normal settings of 40 to 60 PSI, the pump will kick on if the pressure drops below 40 PSI and cut off when the pressure reaches 60 PSI.

Your tank allows water to be drawn without your pump needing to cycle every time the water is turned on. This will protect and prolong the lifespan of your pump and reduce instances of water hammer by reducing air in the pipes and controlling the water pressure.

When choosing the right pressure tank for your home, you will need to know the gallons per minute (GPM) (or Gallons per Hour – GPH) your pump pushes through the pipes in your home, as well as the number of plumbing fixtures (inside and outside) the system needs to service. Most manufacturers provide a chart to help you size your pressure tank, but if you are unsure, it’s best to err on the high side and go with larger pressure tanks.

Importance of a Properly Functioning Water Pressure Tank

Water pressure tanks are critical in the early detection of problems and ultimately saving you money. If you notice your well water pump cycling too often, this could mean a problem with your pressure tank. The sooner you address problems like this, the easier they will be to solve, saving you money on larger repair bills.


Water Well Pressure Tank and Manifold Concerns:


• Pump cycles each time you draw a glass of water or flush the toilet

• Pump will short cycle (on/off/on/off) when bladder style tank bladder has ruptured

• Pump will short cycle if an air over water tank has lost its air charge-Replace air volume control to avoid further damage

• Leaking water from base of unit or seams

• Bad points when chattering or constant clicking at pressure switch-if not repaired will damage pump & control box

• Bad pressure gauge (small dial) when indicator doesn’t move-replace to monitor systems functions

• Water logged tank causing constant running of pump

• Short cycling causing damaged to pressure switch, controls and pump

• Upgrade to larger tank (improve performance)
